APD (Analyse Plan and Deliver) has borne from many years of working either as a Project Manager; Business Analyst; Business and Management Consultant; Manager or Leader in many different locations; industries and environments.
As a result; the APD Model is a business tool I am confident to use for any number of situations which I will share with you in this blog.
The “7 step APD Model” looks like this –

Step 1 (or the overarching element) can be:
- Business plan
- Project plan
- Business analysis request OR
- Business audit request.
This makes the tool one of the most flexible on the market.
Once the information has been determined for Step 1; we move onto Step 2.
Step 2 is the Current Status research. This is correlated (Line of Sight) with the information in Step 1. Failure to do so will ensure there are gaps in your plan moving forward.
When you are satisfied you have the correct information and that steps 1 and 2 are completely in tune, we move to step 3.
Step 3 is the Preferred Reality status. A date is selected in the future and the same research is completed as for Step 2. This information is then correlated once again with Step 1.
When you are satisfied that the information is Line of Sight, you can move onto the next step.
Step 4 is now ready as a result of your full understanding of how you will move from Step 2 to 3. Step 4 is defining a list of Processes, Activities and Tasks (PATs) and understanding how these PATs will help you move forward.
Write out each PAT making sure that they are in line with Step 1.Once you are satisfied that you have the full list of PATs, this becomes your Project Plan.
You can now determine the timeline for those PATs and divide them into Short Term [Step 5] PATs; Medium Term [Step 6] PATs or Long Term [Step 7] PATs.
At each of these stages; there is an accountability report that is shared with the key personnel.
The APD Model as well as being flexible; keeps you focused and delivers the required results for you.
